How to avoid fraud when shopping secondhand.

When selling or buying online, especially secondhand, some things can help you keeping things safe.

In the digital age, online marketplaces like marko offer a simple way for buying and selling goods. However, with this comes the risk of encountering scams. To help you navigate the world of online transactions safely, we've created a list of tips to protect yourself from potential scams.

As a seller...

Be aware of fake messages.

  • Don’t ship items unless you have received a legitimate email confirmation from marko. You will always receive a marko email when someone bought your item.

  • We’re not updating you by SMS, only through the email address you have indicated in your marko profile.

  • Scammers may attempt to deceive sellers by sending you a direct SMS with fake links to shipping websites, such as the Swiss Post. Even if it might look legit, always make sure to quickly check on marko if your item actually got sold.

  • Check the sender address. Our email address is either [email protected], [email protected] or [email protected], nothing else.

Never share sensitive payment info outside marko.

  • We only request your IBAN when you’re adding a listing, or have an on-going sale for which we need to know where to pay out the money.

  • We are never asking for your card details (unless you’re purchasing an item on marko!)

  • Enter your IBAN and other bank details only on marko.ch or with our marko support - don’t communicate it over SMS or other channels.

Don’t share personal information.

  • We have all the information we need to proceed your sale and hand over the relevant details (your name, email and address) to the buyer for a smooth delivery.

  • Don’t share personal contact information under item listings or conduct transactions through external platforms.

As a buyer...

Demand purchase receipts.

  • Especially when purchasing expensive or branded items, always ask for a receipt. This step is crucial to avoid counterfeit products and provides documentation for your purchase. Legitimate sellers should be able to provide verifiable proof of the transaction.

  • If you’re encountering a potential fake item, hit that report button. Our team will investigate and take appropriate measures.

Research the product.

  • Before making a purchase, take the time to research the product. Check and compare it to other items on the internet. Be wary of deals that seem too good to be true and trust your instincts. And if you’ve got a doubt, contact our team at [email protected].
