What makes a great marko listing?

Some tips and best practices on how to make great listings that will increase your sales.

Updated over a week ago

The better the listing, the quicker your item will sell. A great listing is simple to put together, once you know what to include.

Example:

Headline / Title

Create a captivating headline first. Clearly describe the item and use the words that best describe and summarize your items for your headings. If you're stuck, consider what you would type in to find something similar to what you're selling.

Taking Great Photos

Pictures speak louder than words. A strong photo can be all it takes to draw a buyer's attention.

Pictures have a significant influence on sales on marko, as they are often the first thing a potential buyer sees.

Buyers want to see what your item looks like, including details and small blemishes. It’s always a good idea to show the ‘story’ of the item - does the coffee table look good with some candles on it? How would you wear the shirt yourself? Post a photo to showcase how you would style the items you sell.

Get started.

To take great photos of your listing, you don't have to be a professional photographer. No special tools are required; just grab your phone and start shooting. Your photos can be directly uploaded to the listing.

Photo format.

Your photos will appear in a square format on the feed/overview pages, so aim to position your item neatly in the center of the frame. During the listing creation, you can easily crop or adjust the image as needed.

Good to know: Once users click on the image on your listing, they'll see the original size (e.g. vertical format), so ensure a clean background extends beyond the square format for a fantastic sale.

Choose the look for the “cover photo”.

This will be the first image buyers see when browsing through marko or your profile, so you should choose a picture that draws attention and reflects the style of your store. You can arrange your objects in your photos in different ways, e.g. if you are selling clothes:

  • worn by you or another person

  • hanger shot

  • or flat lay

A plain background, like a painted wall or a piece of colored card, creates a bold look, but you can also get creative with different fabrics and textures to make your item stand out. Avoid using a background that is overly busy or cluttered because it will draw attention away from your item.

There are many easy ways to make your pictures stand out. The first image of your item is your chance to really sell your product. Make sure you center the item so that the entire object is visible in the first frame.

Light.

Utilize daylight. Consider taking your photos outside or close to a window. It can be challenging to see the item's details and colors in low light. And keep in mind that you should avoid using flash because a visible flash can cast harsh shadows on your subject.

Details.

Customers looove seeing the details of the product they are buying. Show any rips, stains, or signs of wear to avoid unpleasant surprises for buyers. You can also add a picture of the label and a close-up of the texture.

Attributes.

Your offer will match buyers' search queries better the more complete it is. Make sure you add all relevant item info and tags, including:

  • Category and subcategory(ies) / product type

  • Brand

  • Size

  • Condition

  • Price

  • Color. You can select up to two colors

  • ...many more depending on the product type

Description

Getting your description right is key to boosting sales. Write in a clear and informative way. Step by step:

  • Create a headline first. Clearly and precisely describe your item, starting with the most relevant keywords (such as product type, brand, and color). If you're stuck, consider what the buyer may type in to discover something similar to what you're selling.

  • Because sizes can vary greatly between brands, include the item's precise specifications to let customers know how it fits. You can also include your own, or the model’s, height to give buyers an additional indication.

  • Describe the item's condition, pointing out any faults or wear-and-tear.

  • If there's anything else you wanna add, spill it now. Don't forget to wrap it up with a call to action, something that'll make your audience act on what you just told them. So go on and make that last sentence count!

Let’s Talk Money - the Right Pricing

Start by doing some research on how other sellers are pricing items that are similar to yours. This will help you determine how much customers are willing to pay for your product.

If you remember the original price of the product, you can also mention it in the description.

We are still in the beta-phase, however soon you will have the opportunity to ask and answer questions on a comment section for each listing. This will also allow you to let customers know that you're open to counter offers.

Delivery - Shipping or Pickup

We've seen that buyers favor shipment over pickup. Offering shipping can boost your chances of selling an item. Here you've got 2 options: Custom or Easy Shipping. Custom Shipping allows you to build your own price and shipping conditions. After sending your item, you'll need to add a tracking code to the sale overview, so that the buyer can track the arrival of the package. With Easy Shipping, our cooperation with the Swiss Post makes your life easier (we send you within 1 business day after purchase, a pre-printed label for you to stick on the item package, which you can place in your mailbox for the Post to collect). Once the Post scans the label, the buyer gets automatically informed of the delivery time.

Make sure that you can ship the item in time. Once an item is sold, you will need to ship it within 7 days - but the sooner, the better. Find further information on How Do I Ship an Item Once It’s Purchased.

Spread the Word

Let your friends and social media followers know what you are selling.

Now that you're all set, it's time to create a listing and complete your first sale!
